Creating Opportunity Across WA: Training That Leads Somewhere

For some people, getting into work is relatively straightforward.

For others, the barriers can start long before the first job application.

Literacy.

Not knowing what career options are available.

Or simply never having had the opportunity to get hands on and discover what they are good at.

That is where training can make a real difference.

Across Western Australia, YRT is continuing to build practical training and employment pathways that help people develop skills, confidence and a clearer direction towards work.

From Perth to regional and remote Western Australia, our focus is simple.

Make quality training more accessible and make sure it leads somewhere.

Starting before someone enters the workforce

One of the best ways to create opportunity is to start early.

Through the Construction Training Fund Try A Trade program, YRT is helping WA students gain practical exposure to construction, infrastructure and career pathways they may not otherwise experience.

The Construction Training Fund, or CTF, supports the development of a skilled, safe and sustainable construction workforce across Western Australia.

Its Try A Trade program gives students practical, hands on experience and the opportunity to explore different construction careers before deciding which pathway might be right for them.

YRT is an approved Try A Trade provider, delivering programs across areas including Civil Construction, Drafting, Estimating and Scheduling and Rail Infrastructure.

Our WA team has recently delivered programs including Civil Construction in Ellenbrook and Drafting, Estimating and Scheduling in Tom Price.

For students, it is a chance to step outside the traditional classroom.

They can work through practical activities, meet trainers with real industry experience, understand how different jobs work and start thinking about career options in a completely different way.

Not every young person knows what they want to do when they leave school.

And not every young person thrives through a purely academic pathway.

That does not mean they lack ability.

Sometimes they simply need the opportunity to discover it.

Real exposure can change someone’s direction

YRT sees this firsthand through the students participating in our WA programs.

One participant from a recent CTF Try A Trade program described the experience simply:

“To Nigel and James at YRT, thank you for the experience you have given us. I have learned a lot and really enjoyed the experience.”

It is a simple comment, but it captures what these programs can achieve.

Confidence.

Curiosity.

A better understanding of industry.

And perhaps the beginning of a career a student had never previously considered.

For some students, that next step may be further vocational training.

For others, it could be an apprenticeship, traineeship or entry level employment.

The important part is creating the opportunity to start.

Removing barriers to training

Access to training is not equal everywhere.

That becomes even more obvious across a state the size of Western Australia.

For people living outside metropolitan Perth, accessing training can involve significant travel, cost and disruption.

For others, barriers can include financial pressure, work commitments, family responsibilities, technology, literacy or simply a lack of confidence returning to a learning environment.

Training needs to recognise those realities.

YRT’s delivery model has been built around flexibility.

We deliver from established training locations, workplaces, schools and regional and remote communities, supported by face to face training, digital learning and our Mobile Training Trailer capability.

Instead of expecting every learner to fit the training system, we increasingly look at how the training system can better fit the learner.

YRT operates from Welshpool in Perth and continues to deliver training across metropolitan, regional and remote Western Australia.

Our Mobile Training Trailers and flexible delivery model allow practical training and assessment to be taken closer to schools, communities, projects and workplaces.

That matters in a state the size of Western Australia.

Distance should not be the reason someone misses an opportunity to gain a skill, licence or pathway into employment.

Whether training takes place at our Welshpool facility, a school in Tom Price, an employer site or within a regional or remote community, the objective remains the same.

Accessible training.

Practical skills.

And a clear next step.

From first exposure to workforce capability

At the other end of the pathway are people already entering or working within major industries.

YRT delivers nationally recognised training across construction, resources, infrastructure and other sectors, supporting individuals as well as some of Australia’s largest workforces.

Our ongoing White Card delivery across BHP Western Australian Iron Ore is one example of training being delivered at significant scale.

But whether YRT is working with one school student considering their first career, someone looking to re enter employment or thousands of workers requiring nationally recognised training, the principle does not change.

Training has to mean something beyond the certificate.

It needs to build capability.

It needs to build confidence.

And wherever possible, it needs to move someone closer to employment or career progression.

Different people need different pathways

There is no single type of YRT learner.

They can be school students.

Existing workers.

People changing careers.

Job seekers.

People from regional and remote communities.

People who have experienced disadvantage or disengagement from education.

People rebuilding their lives and looking for another opportunity.

Or someone who simply learns better by doing rather than sitting in a classroom.

That diversity matters.

A good training organisation should not only work for the easiest person to train.

It should be capable of supporting people who may need a different approach or a little more help to get to the same destination.

That means experienced trainers.

Practical learning.

Flexibility.

Support.

And importantly, giving people a reason to see the training through.

Training should lead somewhere

For YRT, the longer term opportunity is bigger than delivering individual courses.

Training should connect with what comes next.

Skills.

Work experience.

Further training.

An apprenticeship or traineeship.

Employment.

Career progression.

Through the broader Yalagan ecosystem, YRT can also connect training with employment and apprenticeship pathways through NexGen Pathways, our Group Training Organisation.

That creates an opportunity to bridge the gap between gaining skills and getting a genuine start in the workforce.

Partnerships and programs such as those supported by the Construction Training Fund are an important part of that journey.

They create earlier exposure to vocational careers and stronger connections between schools, training and the industries that need the next generation of skilled people.

Building WA’s future workforce

Western Australia will continue to need skilled people across construction, resources, infrastructure, logistics, community services, technology and many other industries.

At the same time, there are people across WA with the ability to fill those roles who may simply need a different pathway to get there.

That is the opportunity.
