What is Recognition of Prior Learning?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that recognises the skills and knowledge you've gained through workplace experience, previous training and industry practice.

If you can demonstrate competency against the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification or skill set, you may be eligible to receive the qualification without completing the full training program.

Our assessors will guide you through the process and determine whether your existing experience meets the required competency standards.

• RIISS00060 Traffic Management Implementer Skill Set (TMI1)

• Combined TC1 & TMI1
• Combined TC2 & TMI2

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Before applying for RPL, applicants should ensure they:

• Have current or recent industry experience relevant to the qualification.
• Hold the required prerequisite qualifications (where applicable).
• Can provide evidence of workplace competency.
• Hold a White Card Statement of Attainment (or equivalent where required).
• Are able to converse and comprehend basic English.
• Hold a valid Government-issued Photo ID.
• Have a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI).

EVIDENCE REQUIREMENTS

What You'll Need Before Applying

To ensure your application can be assessed efficiently, applicants must provide evidence demonstrating their skills, knowledge and industry experience.

Following your enquiry, you'll receive a YRT RPL Applicant Checklist specific to the qualification(s) you're applying for. This checklist outlines the mandatory evidence required before your assessment can commence.

Mandatory Evidence

Depending on the qualification being sought, applicants may be required to provide:

• White Card Statement of Attainment or USI Transcript showing completion of the prerequisite construction induction unit.
• Current or recently expired Traffic Controller and/or Traffic Management qualifications.
• Employer verification letter confirming relevant industry experience.
• Traffic Guidance Schemes (TGS) from recent projects.
• Pre-start hazard checklists, SWMS, JSA/JSEA, Take 5s or similar safety documentation.
• Any additional evidence required for the relevant qualification or skill set.

Supporting Evidence (Recommended)

While not mandatory, the following documents may assist your assessor:

• Current resume
• Payslips
• Job sheets or dockets
• Logbooks
• Site training records
• Workplace photographs
• Other relevant workplace documentation.

THE RPL PROCESS

Step 1 – Submit an Enquiry

Contact the YRT team to discuss your industry experience and determine whether Recognition of Prior Learning is the right pathway for you.

Step 2 – Receive Your RPL Information Pack

We'll provide you with:

• RPL Application Form
• Qualification-specific Applicant Checklist
• Evidence Guide
• Fee Information

Step 3 – Gather Your Evidence

Using your Applicant Checklist, collect and submit all mandatory and supporting documentation.

Your assessor will review your evidence against the nationally recognised competency requirements.

Step 4 – Assessment

Your assessor may conduct:

• Evidence review
• Competency conversation
• Workplace verification
• Practical demonstration (where required)
• Knowledge assessment (if required)

Additional evidence may be requested where necessary.

Step 5 – Qualification Outcome

Once competency has been demonstrated, YRT will issue the relevant nationally recognised Statement of Attainment or Skill Set.
